Inclement Weather & Field Conditions

While we aim to maximize training time throughout the year, there are times when weather or field conditions make it unsafe or irresponsible to proceed with scheduled sessions.

Training and games may be canceled due to:

  • Severe weather, including lightning, high winds, or extreme heat
  • Field closures caused by heavy rain, flooding, or unsafe surfaces
  • Any condition that poses a risk to player safety or field integrity

Field availability is monitored in coordination with our facility partners, and decisions are made with safety and long-term field maintenance in mind. Cancellations may happen with short notice and are communicated through PlayMetrics and official club channels as soon as possible.

We appreciate your flexibility and understanding as we work to protect both our players and our facilities.

Lightning Safety Policy

At Sporting West Florida, the safety of our athletes, coaches, officials, and families is our top priority. We follow enhanced weather safety protocols based on U.S. Soccer’s Recognize to Recover Lightning Safety Guidelines to ensure immediate and appropriate action when lightning is in the area.

Our Lightning Protocol

  • Immediate Suspension of Activities
All outdoor activities are suspended when lightning is detected within a 10-mile radius of the facility. This includes training sessions, games, and warm-ups.
  • Seeking Shelter
All participants and spectators must seek safe shelter immediately. The safest locations are fully enclosed buildings with wiring and plumbing, or vehicles with metal roofs and closed windows. Open shelters, tents, dugouts, and pavilions are not considered safe.
  • Resuming Activities
Play will only resume after 30 minutes have passed with no lightning detected within 10 miles. Each new lightning strike restarts the 30-minute countdown.
  • Emergency Response
In the event of a lightning-related incident, call 911. Victims do not carry an electric charge and can be safely assisted. Administer CPR and use an AED if necessary and available.

For further information, you can review the official U.S. Soccer Lightning & Severe Weather Guidelines.
