Welcome to Sporting Select

Formerly the West Florida Soccer Club Competitive Program

Sporting Select is the next evolution of our competitive program. Same heart, same mission — now aligned under the Sporting name.

Designed for committed players ages U9–U19, Sporting Select challenges athletes to grow not only as players, but as people — at home, at school, and on the field.

It’s about more than just winning games. We’re building leaders, teammates, and competitors who thrive under pressure, embrace challenges, and bring passion to everything they do.

What You Need to Know

Pathways Within Sporting

Sporting West Florida serves as the local entry point into the broader Sporting Club pathway. All players who register and attend tryouts may be selected for a Sporting Select team based in Pace, Florida. From there, players may have opportunities to pursue additional levels of competition across the Sporting Club network, including National 1 (N1), ECNL-RL, and ECNL, based on performance, positional needs, team fit, and available opportunities.

Additional pathway opportunities are coordinated through the Sporting network and may include separate identification events or tryouts depending on the platform.

Sporting Select (Sporting West Florida - Competitive)

All selected players train and compete with their Sporting Select teams based in Pace. This serves as the home environment for our U9–U19 competitive teams and the foundation of player development within the Sporting pathway.

National 1 League (Sporting West Florida - Competitive)

Available to select U13–U19 teams. National 1 (N1) is a team-based regional league that provides high-level competition against clubs from across the Southeast. League placement is earned through team performance and qualification, offering an enhanced competitive platform for Sporting West Florida players.

ECNL-RL (Sporting Tallahassee)

U13–U19 players may be identified for ECNL-RL opportunities through the Sporting pathway. Selected players represent Sporting Tallahassee in ECNL Regional League matches and events while continuing to train locally with their Sporting West Florida team.

ECNL (Sporting JAX)

ECNL represents the highest level of league play within the Sporting Club pathway. Selected players compete with Sporting JAX in ECNL competition while maintaining their primary commitment to their Sporting West Florida team.

Scheduling Priorities

When players participate in multiple Sporting pathway opportunities, scheduling priority is applied in the following order:

  1. Sporting West Florida team activities, including National 1 (N1) league matches, tournaments, league matches, and club events
  2. ECNL (Sporting JAX)
  3. ECNL-RL (Sporting Tallahassee)
  4. Additional friendlies, identification events, or supplemental opportunities

A player's primary commitment is to their Sporting West Florida team. Participation in pathway opportunities is intended to complement, not replace, a player's responsibilities to their home club team.

This structure allows players to pursue higher levels of competition within the Sporting Club pathway while maintaining a strong commitment to their Sporting West Florida team and teammates throughout the season.

Is Sporting Select Right for My Player?

Sporting West Florida Competitive is a strong fit for players and families who are:

  • Looking for a more challenging and structured soccer environment
  • Ready to commit to consistent weekly training and periodic tournament-based competition
  • Motivated by long-term player development, not just short-term results
  • Open to coaching that encourages growth, accountability, and resilience
  • Interested in opportunities within the broader Sporting Club pathway as they progress

Unlike recreational soccer, Competitive teams typically participate in one tournament per month rather than weekly games. Most events are within driving distance, such as Foley or Destin, with approximately one overnight tournament in the fall and one in the spring. Older age groups may occasionally travel farther for selected events, including locations such as Panama City Beach, Gulfport, Gainesville, Orlando, Tampa, New Orleans, or Atlanta.

If this sounds like your athlete and your family’s schedule, we’d love to see them at tryouts.

ECNL-RL and ECNL Opportunities

Players interested in ECNL-RL or ECNL opportunities through the Sporting Club pathway may pursue identification events, evaluations, and tryout opportunities directly through Sporting Tallahassee and Sporting JAX.

In addition, players may be identified and nominated for further evaluation by Sporting West Florida coaches and staff based on performance, developmental readiness, positional needs, and available opportunities within the Sporting Club network.

Participation in these evaluations is separate from Sporting West Florida's Sporting Select tryout process. Players pursuing ECNL-RL or ECNL opportunities are encouraged to attend Sporting Select tryouts and maintain Sporting West Florida as their primary club environment unless otherwise directed by the Sporting Club network.

How to Learn More

Information regarding ECNL-RL and ECNL identification events, tryouts, and evaluation opportunities can be found through Sporting Tallahassee and Sporting JAX. Interested players and families may also speak with their Sporting West Florida coach regarding potential pathway opportunities and recommendations for further evaluation.

What to Know About Sporting’s N1

National 1 (N1) is a regional league platform available to select U13–U19 Sporting West Florida teams. Unlike ECNL-RL and ECNL opportunities, N1 teams are based in Pace and remain fully integrated within the Sporting West Florida program.

Participation in N1 is determined at the team level through league qualification and performance. Players must first be selected to a Sporting West Florida team through the standard tryout process before being eligible to participate on an N1 roster.

N1 provides a higher level of competition against clubs from across the Southeast while allowing players to continue training and competing within their home Sporting West Florida environment. Travel is regional and may include matches throughout Florida and neighboring states, depending on league scheduling and division placement.

N1 serves as an enhanced competitive platform within Sporting West Florida and helps prepare players and teams for higher levels of competition while maintaining a strong commitment to their local team, coaches, and teammates.

What to Know About Sporting’s ECNL-RL

Sporting's ECNL-RL teams are based in Tallahassee and compete in the Elite Clubs National League Regional League, one of the highest levels of regional competition within the Sporting Club pathway.

Players may be identified through Sporting West Florida staff recommendations or pursue evaluation opportunities directly through Sporting Tallahassee. Players selected for ECNL-RL will represent Sporting Tallahassee during league competition while continuing to train and compete with their Sporting West Florida team whenever scheduling permits.

League competition includes clubs from across Florida and the Southeast, with game weekends typically consisting of one match on Saturday and one on Sunday. Families should expect regular travel throughout the season, including overnight trips and extended travel weekends.

ECNL-RL features a full league season with standings, postseason opportunities, and pathways to higher levels of competition. Participation requires a significant commitment of time, travel, and financial resources beyond those associated with Sporting West Florida team activities.

Welcome to Sporting West Florida Competitive

program is designed for players ready to train and compete at a higher level. Formerly known as WFSC Competitive, we remain committed to individual development, team culture, and long-term success—on and off the field.

What is Competitive Soccer?

Competitive soccer offers a structured, development-focused environment. Players improve technical skills like dribbling and passing, and develop tactical understanding such as movement and decision-making. Coaching is consistent, intentional, and personalized to help each player reach their potential.

What Makes Sporting Select Different?

We are a family-first club where coaches know every player by name. Our coaching staff includes more USSF-licensed coaches per player than any club in our area. We focus on developing confident, creative players—not just chasing results. While we may be smaller than big-city clubs, we deliver a high-quality experience with a strong sense of community.

Why Is It a 10-Month Program?

Soccer takes time and consistency to master. Long breaks can slow a player’s development. Our August through May season provides the continuity needed for players to build skills, confidence, and long-term success.

Expanded Player Pathways

As part of our alignment with Sporting JAX and Sporting Tallahassee, Sporting Select players now have access to multiple levels of competition within the Sporting Club pathway, including National 1 (N1), ECNL Regional League (ECNL-RL), and Elite Clubs National League (ECNL). National 1 provides a higher level of regional competition for select Sporting West Florida teams, while ECNL-RL and ECNL offer additional opportunities through Sporting Tallahassee and Sporting JAX. These platforms provide increased competition, enhanced player development opportunities, and greater exposure for players aspiring to compete at the highest levels of the game. Players continue to benefit from the local and regional tournaments that have long been a part of the Sporting West Florida experience while gaining access to additional pathways for growth and advancement.

When are tryouts held?

Tryouts for Sporting Select take place each May. Dates are published on our website and social channels.

Who can try out?

Tryouts are open to players ages 8 to 18. Sporting West Florida follows current U.S. Soccer age group guidelines, which group players by school year. In most cases, players will be placed with classmates in the same grade rather than strictly by birth year.

What happens during tryouts?

Players participate in drills, small-sided games, and scrimmage-based evaluations. Coaches assess technical ability, attitude, effort, and coachability.

What if my child can't attend tryouts?

If your child cannot attend the scheduled tryout, email info@sportingwestflorida.com to request an individual evaluation.

What if my player isn't selected?

The $250 registration fee will be fully refunded, and we will help guide you toward appropriate development options within the club.

When are team placements announced?

Team placement emails are typically sent within two weeks of the final tryout date. Players being considered for additional pathway opportunities, including National 1 (N1), ECNL-RL, or ECNL, may receive updates later in the summer.

Can players participate in both a pathway team and a Sporting Select team?

Yes. National 1 (N1) teams are Sporting West Florida teams and operate within the Sporting Select program. Players identified for ECNL-RL or ECNL opportunities continue to train and compete with their Sporting West Florida team whenever scheduling permits. Sporting West Florida team activities, including N1 league matches, tournaments, league matches, and club events, remain the highest scheduling priority.

How do ECNL-RL and ECNL evaluations work?

Players interested in ECNL-RL or ECNL opportunities may attend identification events, evaluations, or tryouts conducted by Sporting Tallahassee or Sporting JAX. Players may also be identified and nominated for further evaluation by Sporting West Florida coaches and staff. Information regarding upcoming opportunities is available through the respective clubs.

The costs are comprised of the registration fee, club dues, uniform/ball costs, and tournament fees. More specific details are listed below.

Season Timeline

The Sporting Select season runs from August through May.

Practice Schedule

Teams train three days per week, typically Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Practice schedules and field assignments are shared prior to the season. Optional clinics and extra training opportunities are available throughout the year.

Holiday Calendar

We follow the public school calendar and take breaks for major holidays including Thanksgiving, Winter Break, and Spring Break. Practices may still be held on shorter weekday holidays, depending on the team and coach.

Weather Cancellations

We do not make up practices canceled due to weather. However, the optional clinics and extra training opportunities provided throughout the season typically make up for any missed sessions.

Tournaments and Travel

Teams usually attend one to two tournaments per month. Tournaments are typically located in or near Pensacola, Destin, Niceville, Fort Walton Beach, Foley, Daphne, or Fairhope. Older teams may occasionally travel to Panama City or further.

How far will we travel for games?

Travel requirements vary by team, age group, league participation, and tournament schedule.

Most Sporting West Florida league matches and tournaments are played within 1–3 hours of Pace. National 1 (N1) teams compete in a regional league and may travel throughout Florida and neighboring states. ECNL-RL and ECNL opportunities involve more extensive travel and may include overnight stays and longer-distance trips throughout the season.

Travel expectations and event details will be communicated by each team as schedules become available.

Do Families Stay Overnight?

Most events are close enough to return home the same day. If an overnight stay is required, it will be communicated well in advance and is generally limited to older teams.

Typical Tournament Format

Tournaments typically consist of two games on Saturday and one or two games on Sunday, depending on team advancement. Multiple Sporting Select teams often attend the same events, creating a fun and supportive club environment for families.

Is playing time guaranteed?

No. Coaches aim to provide meaningful game minutes to all players based on attendance, effort, contribution, and development.

Why does the club use parent and player agreements?

Agreements clarify expectations for players and families. Players commit to effort, respect, and accountability. Parents agree to positive sideline behavior and appropriate communication.

Does the club support college-bound players?

Yes. Our College Prep Program provides recruiting education, highlight video support, and mentorship for players interested in college soccer.

Are sponsorship opportunities available?

Yes. Sponsorships support player scholarships, field improvements, and program growth. Contact boosters@sportingwestflorida.com for more information.
